Now in its 12th year, The Traditional Building Conference Series is a registered provider in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education System (CES); the event provides inspiration and networking for architects, contractors, building owners, facilities managers, interior designers, building artisans, and their building material suppliers. The December 14–15, 2022 event presented seminars and architectural tours on classical design, including the work of Palm Beach architects Addison Mizner, Maurice Fatio, and John Volk; coastal construction practices; adaptive use and infill case studies; historic window restoration/replication; and the preservation tax credit approval process.
Anne Fairfax, AIA, RIBA, of Fairfax & Sammons led a walking tour of the Lake Worth Cottage Historic District, the largest concentration of small-scale cottages in the United States. Preservation architect Rick Gonzalez, AIA, of REG Architects led a tour of the West Palm Beach downtown that featured the former County Courthouse, infill, and a classical Greek Revival building restored after flawed midcentury renovations. The Lake Worth Tour was co-led by local preservation advocate, Richard Stowe.
Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach director of programming Katie Jacobs and archivist Marie Penny led a tour titled “From the Archives to the Streets,” where participants examined drawings by Palm Beach society architects and strolled down world-renowned Worth Avenue.
Other presenters included Richard Sammons, RA, of Fairfax & Sammons; author, architectural historian, and former architecture critic for the Miami Herald Beth Dunlop; Phillip J. Dodd, winner of the 2022 Schuler Architectural Award presented by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach; Gary Brewer, AIA, partner, of Robert A.M. Stern Architects; Russ Oliveri of Oliveri Millwork; Mark Rabinowitz of Evergreene Architectural Arts; Chris Tidwell, Aeratis Porch Products; director of preservation, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach Aimee Sunny; and Eric Mason of Marvin.
