Colleen Chapin joined BCA in 2017 with 10 years of experience in historic preservation, primarily working for Historic New England (formerly the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, SPNEA). Starting her career as a preservation carpenter, her early work and training gave her experience in documenting and repairing historic building fabric using a mix of traditional and modern techniques. Her responsibilities also included promotion of Historic New England’s best practices through homeowner workshops and blog entries, and the ongoing development and maintenance of HNE’s Property Care project database.
As a Senior Preservation Manager with Historic New England, Colleen had overall responsibility for the preservation, maintenance and capital improvements of properties ranging from the 17th to the 20th centuries. In this role Colleen developed conditions assessments and management plans, developed construction documents for budgeted projects and oversaw implementation of various capital projects. The weatherization project to reduce energy consumption of The Lyman Estate by 50% with minimal impact on historic fabric of the National Historic Landmark received the 2013 Massachusetts Historical Commission Preservation Award.
Colleen’s projects with BCA have included conditions surveys and preservation consulting for such historic properties as Faneuil Hall in Boston, MA; Harvard Stadium in Boston, MA: Greycliff Hall at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA; Sawin House in Natick, MA; and The Mount in Lenox, MA. Additionally, Colleen has led the development of Building Preservation Plans for a variety of Government Services Administration (GSA) historic buildings.
She received a master’s degree in historic preservation from the University of Massachusetts and graduated from the North Bennet Street School Preservation Carpentry Program in 2006.
